Hallidie’s Cable Car Triumph Preserves San Francisco Transit
A 19th century inventor Andrew Hallidie created the underground cable system to save animals from brutality on steep hills. His Clay Street line opened August 1 1873 amid fog and peril, launching nine lines and reshaping San Francisco. The system faced 1906 earthquake destruction and later decline until citizen action, led by Mrs Hans Klussman, preserved three lines in 1954.
