Arthur E Smith of 423 Oxford Avenue is reappointed city sidewalk inspector under a new council authorization voted March 3. The appointment takes effect April 16, with the inspector to compile a list of damaged sidewalks for council review. If owners do not repair in time, the city will proceed with repairs.
Washington reports that steel firms challenged President Truman's seizure of mills in federal court arguing illegality and Congress rejection of the seizure tool. Secretary Sawyer assumed possession at 12 01 a m EST prompting a CIO strike cancellation and ongoing court action.
The House voted 332 to 0 to cite Henry W. Grunewald for contempt for refusing to answer questions from tax scandal investigators. The case moves to a grand jury after Senate approval is deemed unnecessary. Grunewald has appeared at two closed sessions and two public hearings and answered only his name and age.
Elyria city council considers a proposal from Jack Hannaford Hannaford vice president of Poplar Homes to donate a 2.5 acre 100 foot wide right of way from Hilliard road to Pasadena avenue for an extension of Pasadena avenue to connect with the city before the proposed turnpike. The donation would depend on routing of the turnpike and may allow future city road building if the turnpike is rerouted north. Hannaford also offers to donate lots on the Pasadena extension side for a playground with zoning to favor commercial on the opposite side. land deeded when accepted by the city. Mrs. Anna J. Sprunk a 47 year old former assistant clerk of Sheffield Lake village faces a perjury trial in Ashland where a seven man and five woman jury was to retire this afternoon after hearing testimony and closing arguments. The trial centered on whether she signed the fictitious name H L Allen to deeds in an $8 000 land purchase tied to a $4 000 profit alleged in 1948.

Elyria community youth leaders plan a three day workshop and laboratory for lay leaders. Miss Connie Lynch chairs the youth committee as Mr and Mrs Ralph Fox of Washington DC direct the course on May 26 27 and 28. Foxes are nationally known recreation leaders who worked with USO during the war and currently conclude a Texas leadership session. Local groups involved in organized recreation will be invited to participate.

Sen Robert A Taft routed in Illinois with a five to one lead over Harold Stassen as Eisenhower trailed in third on write-in votes. Taft captured 48 of 50 delegates with 182 total delegates nationwide to Eisenhower's 83. Kefauver won the Democratic ballot easily in Tennessee.
Four minor traffic accidents were reported to the sheriff's department yesterday and last night. Arthur Rindfleisch and Harold Smith had damaged left sides in a Sugar Ridge road collision. Alfred Stoops reported leftside damage after a Route 82 truck trailer hit and fled. Laura Webb and Hardman Troy collided as Webb turned left on Grafton road. James Gutherie said his car was swiped on Route 301 by an unknown vehicle.
Connie Krohn, 17, of 30902 Cen ter Ridge road, was struck by Laurel Capell of North Olmsted at 1 pm yesterday while crossing Broad Street crosswalk. She was released from Elyria Memorial hospital after X rays. Capell says vision was obscured by a car in the curb lane. charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian.
Leo R. Meyer Jr a Elyria native and World War II veteran was installed as exalted ruler of the Elyria Elks Lodge at a ceremony attended by many members. He succeeds Ed Bembower and brings extensive lodge experience and ritual distinction. Other officers elected include Bill Armitage Paul Corbin Robert Williamson Gerald Nau Claude Wagner Albert Krapp Edmund Kihm Russell Payne Albert Vizen esquire John Resar and Morris Barchard. The installation was led by Gene Fournace of Canton with guests from nearby lodges and palms and flowers enhancing the stations. An inaugural hall to honor the new officers is planned for May 10 at the lodge.
PITTSBURGH The nation's steel mills under government seizure lie virtually idle after the threatened CIO United Steelworkers walkout. The strike ended with President Truman seizing the steel properties, leaving workers ready to return but few jobs available as efforts to restart plants begin.
Republic Steel and its Niles and Steel and Tubes divisions paused production awaiting a Washington Federal court hearing on the seizure order. U S Steel recalled maintenance workers for an orderly restart, while Jones & Laughlin barred most staff at its Southside plant.
The Elyria Telephone Co stockholders approved the board action to amend the charter increasing total shares from 200000 to 330000 with 300000 common and 30000 preferred shares. President Roy W. Ammel said the move funds planned and contemplated improvements. District scouts meetings at Oberlin Church postponed to April 16 at 730 pm.
