Wisconsin crossover set at 40 percent

Private GOP estimates indicate about 40 percent of Wisconsin Republicans who voted in the presidential primary crossed over to vote in the Democratic race. The issue fuels debate between Kennedy and Humphrey, as Humphrey asserts the outcome would be the same with Democrats only. Wisconsin’s open primary allows crossovers, complicating turnout interpretations.

Hebert Pushes Penalty Increase on Ethics Bill

In Congress Hebert failed on a germane technicality when seeking a two year post service ban on weapons industry jobs for officers. He proposed a 10000 dollar fine and one year jail for officers or contractors who violate the ban, but the amendment was ruled out of order. The bill passed the House by voice vote and moves to the Senate. Hebert vows a separate bill to cover penalties. Other notes report George T. Moore on fair representations, Douglas on debenture rates, and Flemming’s resistance to broader federal aid changes.

Census Plumbing Probe Sets Yardstick for Housing Census

The Census Bureau describes housing questions as a measure of home quality, asking households about hot and cold water, toilets, baths, and showers. In 1950 one in four lacked flush toilets and over 12 million had no bathtub or shower, with improvements since then guiding hopes that such questions may fade by 1970 or 1980.
