The mother of five was named last night as Mrs. Elyria in the Ohio Fuel Gas Co competition sponsored by the Elyria Woman's Club. She advances to face titlists from other communities for Mrs. Ohio and Mrs. America titles.
Indian Lore notes that the first Americans welcomed Lorain County settlers in the early 1800s. Senecas and Wyandottes in the region were described as friendly and peaceable.
Lorain section reports municipal workers vote to approve a Teamsters bargaining agent at Yates, while a state patrolmer receives a meritorious service award. A $325,000 school project is planned in North Ridgeville with teacher residence work to begin soon.
Richard Vanover, 71, held without bond in Washington on a first degree murder charge for the death of David B. Owen, former Bradley University president and Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce manager. Owen, 51, was found nude and beaten in an Alton Hotel room. Vanover admitted beating and robbing him and was charged after a hearing. Darline Vanover, described as his wife, was held as a material witness. Owen had served as Bradley president from 1946 to 1952 amid a prior basketball scandal.
An automobile train collision at the Osborne crossing of the Big Four Railroad in Columbia Township killed Michael Paynowski, 75, who lived nearby. He drove west at 12:35 p m as an 11 car passenger and mail train pulled by a diesel locomotive struck his car, dragging it about a half mile while the train slowed. The incident marked Lorain County s eighth traffic fatality of the year and followed another death within 274 hours. Elyrian Rolland Minnich, 31, of 123 Huron
Northeastern and Northwestern Ohio experience mostly cloudy skies with light snow flurries and cold winds. Friday’s high 37 to 42, low 26 to 31. Sunday turns partly cloudy and slightly warmer. A fatal automobile-truck collision on Rt 113 Thursday night left Mr. Paynowski fatally injured. Olmsted Falls’ Dr. F D Adams pronounced him dead at the scene. Sheriff deputies reported the incident as the car approached a crossing and the train engine attempted braking.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced that starting with the 1962-63 school year no team will be allowed to play more than six games on a night before a school day and that it strongly recommends avoiding any contests on such nights.
Rita Pease, Williams County’s oldest resident, celebrated her 102nd birthday on Friday, marking a milestone in her long life with family and friends.
Joannah Felicity Toacher Clapton, WWII refugee from London, is heir to Mrs. Arthur Whitney’s estate in Mendham Two New Jersey. The bequest includes Pleasant Valley Mills 150 acres a 20 room mansion four cottages and seven servants with a 250000 emergency fund and annual income projected at 40000 to 90000. The estate is valued between one million and nearly four million after taxes and expenses with holdings of jewels and stocks. An auction is noted for April 16 in Lorain Ohio.
