India’s Contrasts Seen by Milwaukee Visitor
Religious editor Paul Gustafson presents a first glimpse of India from Calcutta, noting crowded streets, sleeping pedestrians, and a spectrum of Hindu practices. Guides from the Indian government show shrines and a temple of the Sakta sect where animal sacrifice occurs in the morning. goats’ heads hint at symbolic passion. Jainism and Buddhism color Hindu dominance, with vegetarians revered and belief in the soul of ancestors guiding ethics. Hindu culture, rooted in the Indus valley, emphasizes nonviolence, love, toleration, and self knowledge as paths to God.
