Carter Signs Law Raising Retirement Age to 70
President Carter signed a bill boosting the mandatory retirement age to 70 for most Americans and ending age limits for nearly all federal workers. The measure bans mandatory retirement before 70 for private employers with 20 or more workers and for state and local governments in most cases, effective next year. By Sept 30 1978, the 70-year federal retirement age will apply to nearly all federal employees, with few exceptions.
