DETROIT AP. U S auto sales topped one million in March for the first time in nearly four years. Domestic sales reached 895,319 cars up 10 percent from a year ago and the second best March ever. Imports set a record for a month at 187,700, up 45 percent. Total 1,063,019 up 15 percent. GM and Ford led gains.
Lorain Assembly Plant produced a March total of 54 842 vehicles breaking previous records led by 23 273 LTD I models 6 850 Cougars and 24 719 vans. The plant also attracted hundreds of job seekers outside the facility though no new hires were announced.
Ashby Leach supporters held a beer and pizza bash in Cleveland after his acquittal on kidnapping charges but conviction on extortion and firearm counts. He vowed to fast until Chessie System complies with veterans training programs, while officials declined comment. Leach and his lawyers projected appeals and possible plea bargaining, with witnesses noting mixed outcomes and future prison time for gunpoint actions.
