Elyria teachers receive a 25 percent raise effective next fall raising total salaries from 135000 to 168000. The plan sets minimums of 1000 for new teachers and 1200 for those with a AB degree, with various raises by grade and special teacher rules.
The Lorain city council voted four to three to remove Councilman Chas Hyman for holding the job of Common Pleas court bailiff under Judge Thompson, a dual post forbidden by law. Hyman, a Republican, did not vote and says he will stay until courts decide.
Toledo April 6 Federal Judge Killiis ordered Toledo Rail and Light Co. to restore street car service by Thursday morning or a receiver will be appointed. Service had been halted for days. Judge Willits set fares at 7 cents with 2 cents for transfers. The company signed the wage scale as decision was read and the union accepted it.
A fire at 110 Pine Street last night nearly leveled a double house, causing about 2500 dollars in damage. Occupants Clarence and Ottie Brown escaped with little of their furnishings as neighbors gave aid. The origin is undetermined and flames threatened the adjacent residence until the department arrived.
The County Interchurch Conference will be held Friday at the First Congregational church in Elyria with a full day program including devotional periods, World Movement statements, a United Financial Campaign presentation and various religious addresses. Cora Smith granted a divorce from G Laverne Smith this morning by Judge Thompson for gross neglect of duty and custody of their minor child awarded to her.

Mrs Bertha J Harris will speak at the city parent teacher union gathering at the high school auditorium Wednesday at 2 o clock on How to Tell the Story of Life. The address aims to motivate mothers and end with a series of talks to high school girls.
Lorain county fruit growers fear the ongoing cold wave could fatally threaten the crops. No damage yet reported though trees may be affected if temperatures drop further. County fruit grower H. W. Schmidtkons notes peaches and cherries would be first to show damage after buds are nipped.
Fremont April 6 A jury convicts Charles Rehfeld of the murder of Dr Horace A Benson a Norwich dentist on November 25. Verdict is first degree murder with no mercy recommendation after eighteen hours deliberation. Defense pleads insanity.
Citizens presented an annual communication to the county regarding pollution of the river by Elyria factories. Complaint targets Fay Stocking Co and Harshaw Fulier & Goodwin Co for discharging poisonous chemicals into the river instead of using the sewer system.
The grand jury began their session this morning with twenty two cases to investigate. Five are John Doe cases. They hope to complete their labors tomorrow unless further developments arise.
The council's gas committee asked the president to appoint a three member panel to visit the Wooster Gas field and verify reports of ample gas for Logan Gas Co. Critics want an independent inquiry, while Logan Gas Co. offered its map of wells and assistance.

Elyria Chapter of the American Red Cross conducts rural school nursing led by Miss Ruth Paddock. Four months into the program the twofold aim is disease prevention and better school health. No child is inspected without informing parents of defects. Some inaccessible schools are now reached by automobile.
