Slot Machine Inquiry Put Over To Grand Jury
Assistant Prosecutor William G. Wickens said the Lorain slot machine investigation will be continued after a one day grand jury session yielded little progress. Witnesses Dave Crawford Sr. and son George claimed ignorance of machine ownership as officials probe why police failed to pursue warrants after confiscating 25 machines in a downtown club in November 1938. The case centers on alleged owner William McIntyre, a possibly fictional figure, who moved to replevin action then had machines destroyed. proceeds were turned to Lorain’s general fund. The jury also returned six indictments in other crimes, including a break in at Hawkins Motor Co and robberies in Lorain, with arraignments set for Saturday.
