Exchange solves chick funding for Lorain County farmers
Lorain County farmers face banking holidays and rising costs for seeds and stock. Hatcheries offer barter options and low chick prices to keep poultry operations going, with many predicting high egg prices in fall and winter. Buy now, arrange payment with hatcheries, and secure future stock.

Urge Plenty Of Room For Chicks
A study of 123,000 chicks shows higher mortality with crowded housing. With 34 square feet per 100 chicks mortality was 26.3 percent in three months, 35 to 50 square feet cut it to 16.2 percent, and 50 square feet or more lowered it to 13.1 percent. A space of one square foot per two chicks is advised, especially when confinement lasts eight weeks or more. An outdoor-start brood may allow three chicks per square foot in some cases. A 10 by 12 foot house appears sufficient for comfort.
