Bacon Lettuce Tomato Sandwich Mirrors Food Fears
A tongue in cheek bemoaning of modern food issues ties a bacon lettuce tomato sandwich to politics, nutrition and price concerns. It discusses rising pork costs from feed corn shortages, nitrites in bacon, USDA regulation hopes, lettuce labor conflicts led by Cesar Chavez and the Teamsters, machine picked tomatoes, mature green ripening, and wheat price volatility shaping bread and mayonnaise. The piece weaves food safety, agriculture policy and farm labor into a satirical commentary on everyday meals.
