Sunday Services in the Churches by Lillie E Stare
On July 4 1832 a crowd gathered in ox sleds at the township center to clear a space for a union meeting house. By noon the building was completed and a Fourth of July picnic followed the service with a Declaration of Independence read by Jonathan Richards. Early church records are imperfect but indicate Baptist Congregational and Methodist Episcopal activity from 1833. The present records trace a union of Litchfield and Penfield churches in 1845, dissolved in 1855 to operate as independent bodies.

A service began fifteen minutes early at 10:30 a.m. with ten girls and an individual examined before the congregation on Christian fundamentals, leading to full church communion in the rite of Confirmation.
