Washington AP Customs Bureau found grenades submachine guns marijuana and switchblade knives in a test opening of foreign mail packages at two ports in one day Rep Silvio Conte called it amazing after Commissioner Lester Johnson told a House Appropriations subcommittee about tests in San Francisco and New York Johnson said most weapons came from Vietnam area and some as souvenirs He urged a crackdown noting explosives and firearms found as the major concern and described the situation as relatively new
