Increased Interest Shown In Soybeans
The establishment of soybean processing mills in Ohio has shifted focus from production for hay to seed, says agronomist J B Park. Ohio's 1935 soybean crop was twice 1934 and three times 1933, driven by blight in clover soils and the new daily cash market for seed. Soybeans grow on acidic soils unfertile for clover and can yield hay comparable to alfalfa when cured properly. Feed manufacturers now use soybean meal in mixes because of ample supply.

Feeding Chicks: Substitutes and Start-Up Routines
The guide recommends using fish oils as a substitute for sunshine and alfalfa meal or legume hay to replace green grass. An all mash feed is preferred for the first eight to ten weeks, with one ration often sufficient until eight to twelve weeks. Ensure feeders and waterers prevent chicks from entering and are cleaned frequently to stop rapid disease spread. Feed within 24 to 48 hours after hatch, provide adequate feeder space, and consider milk as the sole directing feed in the first week to stimulate early growth.
Nurse Crops Starve Many Ohio Seedings
Ohio State agronomy professor C J Ward warns that nurse crops do not aid clover seedings. Competition from grains reduces stand. spring grains fare better than fall cereals. Clipping wheat seeded with alfalfa saves seedings in wet years. sowing fewer grains per acre helps only so much. early legume seeding and proper covering improve establishment.
