Jobs Seen Hit Ceiling At 37 000 In Canton Plant Boom

Henry S. Ernst of the Canton Chamber of Commerce predicts a production job ceiling between 36 000 and 37 000 as defense spending and war timing shape employment. He estimates about 35 000 workers by June next year, with most gains in naval ordnance and expanding facilities. Layoffs unlikely. 75 percent of output is defense materials and workers shift within defense plants. Small plants may fare better as the Defense Production Association secures contracts for 32 member firms. Ernst tracks weekly payrolls to chart a 16 year labor history.
