Deportation For Bridges Again Sought

SAN FRANCISCO May 26 AP Harry Bridges longtime West Coast labor leader and two aides were indicted on perjury and conspiracy charges related to his 1945 citizenship hearing. A civil action seeks to revoke Bridges citizenship, accusing him of Communist ties then and now. Bail set at 5000 each. The case fuels years of government attempts to deport Bridges, president of the CIO International Longshoremen and Warehousemen's Union.

Welfare Gets Biggest Share Of 60 Millions

Lancaster Ohio Police Chief Sam Hutsler was freed on a 500 dollar bond after extortion charges, with Lt Everett Brown still sought. Three officers accused Hutsler and Brown of taking 37.25 in kickbacks from two merchants over radio antennae and leather coats sales to the department. Hutsler, released on habeas, set May 31 for a hearing.

Jail Break Attempt Ends With Guard Rescue

A Stark County jail guard escaped serious injury when radio operator Deputy Stanton heard cries and aided him during an attempted jailbreak. Prisoners Cary and Geter used smuggled hack saw blades to attack the guard, with Cary seizing a rear approach before being halted. Cary's wife Betty Cary was arrested. the guard was treated for head wounds and released after X rays.
