U S Strength in Europe Grows With Berlin Blockade
The United States has about 115000 military personnel in Europe, up from under 97000 a year ago, driven by Berlin airlift needs. The rise is mainly in air force crews and support staff, with navy air crews and transport crews also counted. Four air combat units and multiple troop carrier groups are deployed or rotating in Europe, supported by Burtonwood depot in England. The text notes airlift deployment and excludes air force combat units in rotational training. The first life insurance policy on record dates to 1583 in England.
