Sales Tax Shift To Retailers Plans To Boost Ohio Revenue
Ohio Senator Emmett Guthrie proposed replacing the state sales tax with a 3 percent gross receipts tax paid by retailers. Tax stamps would be eliminated and prices could rise to pass on the tax. Governor Lausche pledged no new taxes amid pressure for funds. Comparisons were drawn to Michigan revenue results and administration costs. Two similar gross receipts tax bills were pending in the House.
