Ohio Bell Granted Nine Percent Rate Increase Approved

Ohio Bell's Canton service will rise about 9 percent following a unanimous Ohio Public Utilities Commission order. The hike, effective immediately, raises Canton business rates to 10 dollars from 9 and rural and residence rates across 170 exchanges in half of Ohio. The change adds roughly 8.48 million dollars in annual revenue for the company, with a target return up to 5.67 percent, amid protests from 19 communities.

Fire destroys First Christian Church at Minerva

Fire of undetermined origin leveled the First Christian Church in Minerva amid dense smoke. Loss pegged at $90,000 with only the parsonage saved. Assistant Fire Chief Mervin White injured by falling slate. Rev. William Clague away in Cleveland. The church, built around 1832, had 117-year history and about 600 members. Organ, pine construction, and major additions noted. Paris and West Township joined Minerva fire crews.

Vote on Canton's low rent housing sent back to committee

Canton council deadlocked 8 to 7 on a resolution to turn three public housing projects over to the Canton Metropolitan Housing Authority for use as low rent units. Albert S. Fromm cast the deciding vote to send the measure back to the welfare committee after a heated 30 minute session.

Heart Attack in Home Fatal to B C Sharrock

Councilman Baxter C. Sharrock, age 60, died of a heart seizure at 7:30 this morning in his home at 830 Marion Ave SW. He was preparing to go to work as custodian for First Reformed Church and was dead when his wife reached him. Elected in 1945 from the Third Ward, he had been active at a council session Monday and spoke on belt-line conveyor and Don Mellett Homesteads issues.

Alliance Theater Fire Ruins 1909 Columbia House

Three Alliance fire companies and a Sebring unit battled a blaze at the Columbia Theater, built in 1909, for over an hour and a half. The auditorium and balcony areas were ruined, with damage estimated over 100000 dollars. The fire, started near the balcony entrance, caused extensive internal destruction but spared exterior walls and nearby buildings. The Marsh Theaters, Inc. owns the venue, insurance covers losses, and rebuilding plans were unclear.

Reserve Board Cuts Stock Margin to 50 Percent

Canton liquor permit freeze could bar new licenses

State Liquor Director Oscar L. Fleckner told The Repository that Canton area D-3 whisky by the drink and D-5 night club permits likely won’t grow in the coming months. An indefinite extension of the 60 day permit freeze, tied to revisions of the Liquor Control Act, is proposed by the Ohio Board of Liquor Control and state Senate action. The freeze, effective after a 10 day wait, aims to buy time for sweeping changes. hearings set in Columbus and revisions expected to number about 100.
