Red Ignores Query Again in New York Trial
John Gates, editor of the Daily Worker, again refused to answer a question about party members while on trial for conspiring to overthrow the government. He faces jail for defying a Fifth Amendment claim and prompts fresh bail questions for two other defendants, as leftist protests erupt in Union Square. The probe centers on Gates's Youngstown era and his claim that answering would harm livelihoods and his rights.
