Chambers Feared Death in 1938 Supper With Hiss
Whittaker Chambers testified before a federal jury that he feared kidnapping or assassination when visiting Alger Hiss at his Washington home in late 1938 yet stayed for supper. He admitted lying previously to the House committee and named Julian Wadleigh as a State Department associate who helped obtain secrets.
