A stunting plane collided with an Eastern Airlines jet, killing 16 aboard. The eerie dawn crash sent shock through the region as investigators review flight logs and weather conditions. Local authorities urged calm as communities mourn and officials reassess air safety protocols.
More than 1 000 Ohio fire fighters and their wives are set to attend the 11th annual Ohio State Firemen's Association conference in Canton August 12 13 and 14 with headquarters at the Onesto Hotel. Karl Lehr of Canton is host president of Stark County Firemen's Association. Paul Stockert is general chairman with 17 committees coordinating events including a parade Saturday night. State officers William Kingszett George Broughton M L Gifford and M L Warner are expected. The program includes a reception dance a luncheon for wives and a banquet followed by a parade through downtown Canton featuring demonstrations at the Navarre Fire Department drill field.

In Shanghai on July 30, about 150 former U S Navy employees, mostly Chinese with some Indians and White Russians, locked in three U S consular officials and blockaded the building for a second night. They demand back pay and severance equal to 64 percent of months pay. The trapped officials include acting consul-general Walter McConaughty, naval attaché Commander Morgan Slayton, and administrative attaché Reuben Thomas. Ten other Americans and several Chinese remained inside earlier but later could come and go. only essential staff reported for work to avoid a new lock-in.
A Canadian breeze cooled Canton Saturday afternoon as intermittent showers relief from heat. Rain totals reached 1.41 inches for the day with 0.12 to 0.22 inches in later showers. Forecasters predict clear, cooler weather tonight and tomorrow. Eastern Seaboard endures heat wave with at least 76 deaths as a storm-studded front moves east. Attendance was about 1,000, with roughly 100 children, as judging moved indoors.
Stark County's recently closed tax collection totaled 3,257,514.16 dollars and reached 96.49 percent of the current duplicate charge. County Treasurer Frank A. Hoffman announced Saturday that the collection was highly satisfactory with only the usual delinquencies expected among current accounts.

A U S Navy F6F Hellcat pilot on a training flight buzzed a Piper Cub twice and then collided with an Eastern Airlines DC-3 near Fort Dix New Jersey. The fighter and the DC-3 crews and 12 passengers including a child died. the Piper Cub’s pilot survived. Witness George Humphrey said the navy pilot appeared skilled but reckless, and the wreckage spread over two miles as both aircraft burned. The DC-3, en route from Boston to Memphis, had taken off from LaGuardia. the Piper Cub’s pilot was unharmed.
