Tax surtax change and filing deadline urged by official

Mr Gross explains the 6 percent surtax applies from the first dollar of taxable income up to 2000, with last year’s threshold at 4000. The normal 4 percent tax remains unchanged. The defense tax is dropped as the surtax absorbs it. He expects heavy filing at Canton and other offices before the March 15 deadline, predicting 45,000 to 50,000 returns next year. In Stark and nearby counties 31,092 returns were filed this year, vs 14,172 in 1940, and forms will be mailed later, with failure to receive no excuse for missing filing.

New Year War Production Sets City on Swift Pace

The city starts 1942 with heavy war material goals as major plants shift to defense work. Production in December showed 10 largest facilities moving from 85 to 100 percent toward war output, with civilian items increasingly redirected. Soldier furloughs end as Christmas breaks conclude and many young men depart for posts. National and international prayers mark the year’s beginning, with President Roosevelt designating January 1 as a day of prayer and churches across the country and abroad observing services for a victorious peace. Special services in Washington Cathedral’s Bethany chapel recall World War I figures and Kellogg’s tomb remains nearby.
