United Press reports the Office of Production Management will convert all auto facilities to war implements. All sales of new automobiles were halted as of yesterday with production to stop completely in 30 days under a forthcoming rationing system.
The proposed 1942 city appropriations show a $288,418 rise over 1941, with general fund expenditures pegged at 1,057,271 and total operating spending at 2,313,078. Mayor Folk and Council President Fromm stressed national crisis and municipal responsibility as the new council organized.
Three armed bandits robbed the Ohio state wholesale liquor store at 320 Cherry Ave NE after tying up a watchman and two residents in the Canton Storage Co. building basement. They loaded an 1800 pound safe and eight cases of liquor onto a truck, stole $8 from the Lutz couple, and fled. Police said the incident occurred shortly after 1 am with a lookout warning the group would take about 10 minutes.
British and South African troops captured Bardia near the Libyan border and released about 1,000 British prisoners held by the Axis garrison. E C Rasbourne of 2909 3rd st NW appeared at Canton office to file a 1942 income tax return. He paid immediately, citing wartime needs and urging others to pay early to support the nation.
