District Spelling Bee Preparations Begin Across Schools

The Repository reports third annual spelling bee launches with preliminaries this week in most districts. Canton starts Tuesday with finals set for April 13 at Timken High School and grand finals April 22. Stark County leaders including T C Knapp and school principals form the committee.

Deputy Arrests Driver Chasing County Cruiser

Deputy Ivan Ray pursued a speeding motorcyclist on Route 30 near Massillon when a tractor driver Leo Danielson followed, lectured him on speed limits, and forced the deputy off the road. Danielson, 39, of Massillon, was booked in Canton on speeding and resisting arrest.

Canton shows a mixed unemployment picture with about 1,500 layoffs in four months but total payrolls remain higher than a year ago. OS.E.S. figures report 46,675 on payrolls across 74 firms, up 3,281 from last year, and job orders in February at 146 after a postwar lull.

Truman to give five minute Red Cross talk Monday night
