Tuesday morning a fleet of trucks will begin to comb Canton, each section daily, collecting metal scrap from homes and businesses to supply war plants. Under the American Legion scrap drive, loose steel and iron will feed furnaces and spur armament production. Saturday will see a general cleanup. residents with large pieces may call for pickups.
Daily schedule shows RUCKS will pass every Canton home starting Tuesday to collect curbside scrap metal. Boy Scouts will call the day before to advise on needed scrap. Collections run Tuesday Northeast, Wednesday Northwest, Thursday Southwest, Friday Southeast. For large items, call 4-0454 or tell the calling Scout. a special truck will be dispatched.
The American Legion and Boy Scouts plan a city scrap drive with volunteers calling on homes and businesses to collect metal. Scrap funds stay local to buy emergency equipment, with police guarding curbside piles. The Legion aims to melt a German cannon and machine gun into munitions for return to owners.
Uninterrupted din of machines marked the Washington birthday as industry produced arms for the nation. City offices and banks closed for the legal holiday while draft boards prepared for the March 17 lottery. About 40,000 workers stayed on shifts as public schools and several parochial schools operated or planned lessons on Washington.
The Associated Press reports the new wartime draft lottery will be held on March 17. Capsules will hold numbers T-1 to T-? drawn from a goldfish bowl in Washington, determining order on which 8 to 9 thousand newly registered men aged 20 to 44 will be called. Local boards will shuffle cards and assign T numbers, with latest registrants placed at the end of lists and unlikely to be called until existing lists are exhausted. Brig. Gen. Hershey authorized public release of numbers and names.
At Newport Kentucky on February 23 the towboat G. W. McBride split in half after striking a bridge pier as the swollen Ohio River swept the vessel. Rivermen recovered five crewmen from a johnboat while 16 were believed trapped aboard the 170 foot craft with 13 men and 3 women missing. Ernest Easter, 37, of Buena Vista Ohio, described the sudden sinking and chaos aboard as rescuers searched the wreckage.
Huntington, W. Va., Feb 23. Retired riverman Capt. R. H. Allen recalled the 1927 capsize of the towboat then named the Conqueror near Sciotoville, Ohio. Salvaged and rebuilt by the McBride family, it was relaunched and later sold to the Ohio River Co. He estimated the boat was forty or fifty years old.
Allied air power backed by US and Dutch forces struck in Bangka Strait about 250 miles northwest of Batavia. They set fire to a transport of over 10 000 tons and strafed remaining ships while four Japanese planes were downed on Java airfields. The Bali invasion force suffered heavy losses as Japanese overran part of Bali.
The coastguard cutter Alexander Hamilton was torpedoed by an enemy submarine off Iceland. Taken over by the Navy last fall, the cutter was likely used for convoy duty. While being towed into port it capsized and had to be sunk by gunfire.
Meridian Mississippi February 23 federal agents and Meridian police killed Irving Charles Chapman after trapping him on a road. He opened fire from his car and was shot dead. he carried a long criminal record including bank robberies and jail breaks.
London reports a sweeping ministerial overhaul by Prime Minister Churchill, dropping five ministers and reshuffling key posts. Sir James Grigg appointed war minister, hailed as a ruthless administrator, while war cabinet remains intact.
Moscow February 23 Premier Josef Stalin spoke to Russians on the Red army's 24th anniversary pledging complete victory in a war of liberation against Germany. He outlined larger aims for workers and warned of a hard fight ahead while insisting the Red banner will fly everywhere and urging daily gains in tanks aircraft guns and other arms to sustain the national war effort. He noted battlefield progress including defeats of the enemy at Tikhvin Rostov and near Moscow and warned against overconfidence.
President Roosevelt will speak to the nation in plain language tonight at 10 p m about the progress of the war thousands of miles away and its impact on American towns. The White House notes Tokyo radio is mounting a major propaganda push ahead of the address via a government information memorandum read to reporters.
A blaze at the Eleanor hotel in Akron's High and Market streets killed six people, including Mrs. Margaret Barrett and Miss Effie Hinton. Three women and three men perished, with two others severely burned. Mrs. Barrett died after jumping from a third floor window as residents fled, some leaping to safety due to a stuck fire escape ladder.

Australian and Dutch reports reveal Bali harboring a large Japanese invasion as Bali defence tightens. The Bali airdrome at Denpasar is the likely target, while Java and Bali waters bear wrecks from a sea battle. Dutch and American forces push back.
