Civilian Defense Calls Volunteers To Fortify Canton

A Canton defense appeal urges thousands of volunteers to join Civilian Defense amid warnings that inland cities could be bombed. As of Saturday only 1,675 have enlisted. 7,500 volunteers are needed including 2,400 wardens and fire watchers.

FBI raids seize aliens in four state sweep

The FBI plus local officers arrested over 200 aliens, including Japanese Italians and Germans, in California Arizona and beyond. By mid afternoon 278 had been booked for immigration. 150 arrests were in Northern California with 96 Japanese 46 Italians and eight Germans. Some seized items included guns cameras radios and dynamite. The raids target suspected enemy links and activities.

The Associated Press reports that defense workers, farmers with no other transport, taxi operators, and essential traveling salesmen may buy new cars under rationing starting March 2. The list also covers physicians, visiting nurses, fire and police, and others vital to safety and health, pending proof the current car is inadequate. Local boards assess need, with only 340,000 new cars available this year and many eligible persons unlikely to obtain a purchase.

Reporter McDaniel's perilous dash from Singapore to Batavia

C Yates McDaniel, AP correspondent, describes escaping Singapore aboard the last ship leaving the burning fortress. U S Planes and Ship Burma Invaders Fight in Burma

American and British fliers launched a fierce aerial counter attack along the eastern Burmese front from dawn to dusk, strafing Japanese troops and transport columns and causing fires. RAF and Chinese air force cooperation helped stem the push toward Rangoon while Japanese bombers raided west toward Bassein. American volunteers and RAF pilots shot down three more enemy fighters with no loss to their own forces.

Norwegian tanker Kongaggard torpedoed near Curacao

Thirty-nine crew members were lost or presumed dead after the Norwegian tanker Kongaggard was torpedoed off western Curacao, with seven survivors reporting flames and oil igniting as the ship burned. Survivors described the sea turning into a burning hell while the attack unfolded.
