Stark County Registers 17,616 For World War II Draft

Stark County added about 17,616 new registrants aged 20 to 44 over the weekend, boosting the manpower pool to an estimated 48,140 for possible military service. Officials note the figure is provisional as two boards had not finished tabulation. The count tops last week’s projection by roughly 2,500 for ten boards.

Walter Witham to Head Defense Savings in Stark county

Walter R. Witham, an insurance specialist and Leonard Agency Co. director, was named Stark county chairman of the Ohio Defense Savings Staff. He will organize an executive committee and subcommittees to promote Defense Bond sales in Canton, Massillon, Alliance, and other areas. Witham, from Farmington Missouri, is a 1912 Maine B S civil engineering graduate and has extensive fire protection and insurance engineering experience.

Churchill cites reduced convoy perils in Commons

Eighty Women Register for Shop Work Here

Eighty women registered for defense shop work classes at Timken Vocational High School in Canton. Due to high demand, four classes will be held on Monday through Thursday nights with instructors Marion A. Conkle and another to be named. Topics include mechanical drawing layout blue print reading soldering wiring drill press operation chipping and filing. A possible auto mechanics class was discussed but not yet planned.

Registered men from Stark county included those born after October 16 1940 and those reached 21 by July 1 1941 totaling 30 524. About 2 000 accepted for induction, with rate to rise in weeks. Saturday registrants wait on local boards to exhaust 1-A supplies before call. A March lottery will set order numbers.

Canton board of education approved shortening the 1941-42 term to end June 5 with high schools releasing ninth to eleventh graders June 3 and seniors by June 5. McKinley seniors graduate June 2–3 Lehman seniors June 5. Final exams are eliminated. teachers give final tests in regular periods. Grade cards distributed June 5.

Special Lent Services to Open Lenten Season Wednesday

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday observances by Catholic and Protestant churches. Union Lenten services start at First Christian church with Rev. E Stanley Jones delivering the first sermon at 7 30 p m. The National Christian Mission movement joins the opening service as Lent runs 40 days to Easter April 5.

Curfew urged by oil industry in wartime push

Petroleum Coordinator Harold L. Ickes said the industry recommended a 7 p m to 7 a m curfew on all east coast retail gasoline and no Sunday sales to avert rationing. He noted a 350 000 barrel daily east coast pipeline and a 15 percent civilian consumption cut as long term aids.

Planes Sweep Caribbean On U-Boat Trails

BALBOA Canal Zone Feb 17 American armed forces tightened Caribbean defenses against possible German submarine attacks in the Dutch West Indies seen as a feint for a Panama Canal strike. Submarines shelled the Standard Oil Refinery at Aruba and torpedoed five to ten Allied oil tankers off Maracaibo. Five ships were torpedoed and several other vessels missing feared torpedoed with heavy loss of life. three tankers attacked at Aruba confirmed with others believed sunk or missing. Lieutenant General Frank M. Andrews said at Aruba during yesterday’s attack that at least one submarine torpedoed the tankers and shelled oil installations.

State War Mobilization Of Highway Department In Ohio

Ohio Governor Bricker announced that the entire manpower and motorized equipment of the state highway department are mobilized for wartime emergency. The plan uses highway forces to combat sabotage and military attack and to aid evacuation and rehabilitation of attacked areas across counties and municipalities.
