Canton Traffic Death Toll Rises to Three

A Canton resident Susie L. Rogers 59 of 407 12th St NW died at Mercy hospital at 9 20 a m from injuries after being struck by a southbound car at 12th St and Cleveland Ave NW. Police report coroner E C Reno opened an investigation. Surviving include two brothers Frank and Stephen Heyard and four sisters Mrs Charles Hahn Mrs Edith Shew Mrs Rudolph Rhinehart all of Canton and Mrs Daniel W Meske of Akron. Two other pedestrians were injured Sunday in separate crashes including Michael Palaidani and two women from Canton and Massillon in Erie county. An Aruba attack story follows.

Gas heating use curbed by WPB in 20 states and DC

The war production board ordered curtailment of natural gas for heating new units installed after March 1 in Ohio and 16 other states plus the District of Columbia to ensure gas for arms production. Heating via gas may be limited to rooms or partial heating, excluding cooking stoves or refrigerators, with exemptions for incidental room heaters. East Ohio Gas reports 90 percent of 1400 new homes connected last year used gas heat.

Draft Registry Closes Tonight in Stark County

Stark County’s 10 draft boards join 320 Ohio boards as the first wartime registration closes by 9 p.m. Registrants are 20 to 44 and new questionnaires on vocational experience will be sent to those not yet called. About 15,000 Stark County men are expected to register with 7 a.m. openings across 135 sites.

Rev Earl Herman Dies After Heart Ailment at 53

Rev Earl Cameron Herman long time pastor of Trinity Lutheran Canton died at 6 10 a m in Aultman hospital from a heart condition. He aged 53 and his death follows illness after conducting services for Mrs Bertha Denzler. He served since 1921 and was active on Lutheran church boards and Wittenberg college trustees.

Japanese Drive On In Burma And Sumatra

The Japanese have captured Palembang in southern Sumatra as part of a southward offensive threatening Java. Allied air forces struck Japanese cruisers and transports near Bangka Strait causing heavy damage. Burma battles push toward Thaton and Rangoon, with Japanese forces advancing about 40 miles beyond the Salween river. Australia calls for total mobilization as Singapore falls after 123 years of British control.

Canton Mission Opens With Mass Rally at First Christian

The Rev E Stanley Jones preached that Christ is the enduring answer to mankind as 2800 attend a mass rally at First Christian church in Canton. The talk launched the National Christian Mission program aiming to create change in life and society through evangelistic effort under United Protestant auspices. Jones warned against half measures and urged turning to Christ whose gospel of the Kingdom within emphasizes the central idea of the mission.

Alabama Launch Heralds New War Era With Fast Ship

Secretary of the Navy Knox hailed the launch of the 35 000 ton battleship Alabama in Portsmouth Virginia nine months ahead of schedule. He said ships would pour from yards and bring sea supremacy and victory. Alabama is the sixth under the defense program and last of four in its class. Welding and other methods reduced weight, boosting capacity for guns armor and ammunition.

Beaten Singapore Battled On Only To Make Victory Costly

Hong Kong reporter Harold Guard describes the fall of Singapore as Japan sealed its victory over a British Imperial army. The island was a blazing inferno with 60,000 troops and no naval units remaining. The sailing ship carrying the journalist escaped as shelling roared.
