In Columbus on February 15 AP reports a flood of bills hitting the General Assembly. The House restricted new law introductions while 278 bills arrived before the deadline, bringing totals to 653 versus 494 last session. the Senate took 52 bills for 186 so far. House and Senate liquor committee chairmen spoke.
The Ohio Senate commerce and labor committee backed an initiated bill to legalize colored oleomargarine with licensing controls, enforcement staff boosts, and a nine member commission. The package includes permit freezes, residency bans near churches and schools, and a $25 deposit with applications. A separate liquor bill seeks higher permit costs and a state wage tax reform aimed at eliminating municipal payroll taxes.
A 17 year old, Jay O Eskew, driving his father's 1941 Cadillac on Cleveland avenue NW, lost control and struck a parked City Lines bus after racing another car. Eskew was treated at Mercy Hospital for cuts. Police said the boy's insurance had expired that Monday morning. He was cited to juvenile court.

John J. Gilmore, 57, of North Industry, abandoned his car after colliding with two parked vehicles and a utility pole. He tried to hitchhike home but was picked up by accident prevention bureau officers who were seeking him. He faces charges of leaving the scene, reckless driving, and operating without lights.
A Washington dateline note in Sunday’s Repository advertised a free book titled Your Child From Six to Twelve from the Children’s Bureau. Canton’s bureau received many calls. the Canton unit had none. The correct source is the U S Children’s Bureau Washington DC. A penny postcard to that address will secure a copy. Additional copies are 20 cents each from the U S Printing Office.

The Construction Council of Stark County announces wage increases with two AFL unions in Canton and one in Massillon effective April 1. Canton Bricklayers Local now $2.50 hourly after 12 percent raise. Hod Carriers and Laborers Locals gain 10 cents to $1.55 for laborers, $1.60 for mortar mixers, and $1.70 for plaster tenders across about 900 workers. Additional raises are sought by several locals. electricians await deal on $1.87+ hourly journeyman rate. The bricklayers meet at 7:30 pm at 114 Harrison Ave NW to elect a new financial secretary and business agent.
The House veterans committee approved a bill granting $90 a month pensions for World War I and II veterans at age 65. It would also provide non service connected disabilities from $20 to $90, with $120 for cases needing an attendant. The VA estimates first year costs near $2 billion, rising thereafter.
The 1948 annual City Auditor T Frank Snyder report to council shows an unencumbered cash balance of 249553.34, total receipts 4472090.37 and total disbursements 4415473.67. The 1 644623.45 deficit is earmarked for special funds including 700000 for a proposed arena auditorium.

The state legislature considered a bill to recognize a proposed 130 mile conveyor belt line between Lorain and East Liverpool as a common carrier. H. B. Stewart Jr. announced plans in Cleveland for Riverlake Belt Conveyor Lines, Inc. to build the two way line, with eminent domain rights for land needed to erect the overhead path.
A proposal to limit rush hour parking on 12th Street from Fulton Road NW to Gibbs Ave NE was tabled after residents protested. A traffic committee report supported the move but no vote occurred. The restriction would run weekdays 4 to 6 PM, excluding Sundays and holidays, and rely on Traffic Commissioner C L Deerwester’s plan.
Donald Grimm a Stern Mann Co. employee from 814 Essig NW pleaded innocent to grand larceny for stealing 657 dollars worth of clothing. He waived preliminary hearing and was bound to the grand jury. Accomplice Jack Wonderly, 24, of 715 33rd NE, will be arraigned later. Much of the merchandise was recovered at a suspect’s home, police reported.
Senate leaders Connally and Vandenberg oppose any treaty language that would automatically commit the United States to war. Hickenlooper supports reserving this country’s right to decide on actual provoked aggression. The debate follows discussions with Acheson as Congress weighs the Atlantic alliance.
