Ohio Promises Aid for Adding To Sanatorium

Ohio pledged a 250000 grant to aid an addition to the Molly Stark Tuberculosis Sanatorium. County officials and local architects met with Ohio Health Department leaders in Columbus to review plans. Final plans and general contract should be ready by July 1 1950 to secure the grant and continue work.

Richville man dies in Route 62 crash near Greenwood

Thomas R. Pope of Richville was killed when a speeding 1941 coupe failed to return to its side and hit an oncoming car at the crest of an incline on Route 62 near Greenwood. Five others were seriously or moderately injured, including Pope’s passengers Frank Pero Betty Kline and Albert Vargo. The other car’s occupants Raymond and Charles Boling suffered injuries. All were taken to Mercy Hospital. Pope’s death marks Stark County’s tenth traffic fatality of the year. Pope, a Hercules Motors employee and World War II navy veteran, was to marry Loretta Aceti June 11. He leaves parents, three sisters, and a brother.

Dr H H McConkey Dies After Two Year Illness

Dr H H McConkey, 39, of 3715 Croydrenrd Avondale, died Thursday from a heart ailment after a two year illness. An anesthetist and industrial physician for Republic Steel, he served in the Army Medical Corps and in the South Pacific. Survived by widow Margaret and two daughters Nathalie and Susan, with mother Mrs B M McConkey of Lima and brother Dr W N McConkey of Cincinnati. Funeral Saturday at 2 p.m. at Spiker funeral home with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Bandits Leave Kidnap Car Near Amsterdam in Probe

Investigation centers on southeastern Ohio after the kidnap car was found on a farm near Amsterdam. A miner, Steve Ornouski, led police to the car after claiming armed men forced him to drive from Mineral City to Dennison before abandoning the vehicle. Roy Mann was arrested at his Sabarton home. police deem him a bank robbery suspect, while two others and a woman are sought.

McSweeney Opens Senate Bid if Lausche Rejected

Acheson Opposes New China Aid as Futile

Secretary of State Acheson flatly opposes a proposed $1.5 billion aid package to Nationalist China. Catholic School Addition to Start June in Stark County

A 15 month project to combine Central Catholic High School St John division for boys and Mt Marie division for girls will begin around June 1 as Bishop James A McFadden plans to turn the first spadeful at the Mt Marie site between Canton and Massillon. The 1200 student building aims to be ready for fall 1950 with an 11 room faculty residence adjacent across 4825 Tuscarawas St W. Subscriptions to the annex drive total $770,000 with $390,000 paid. Hagers Work Recognized By National Safety Council Award

The National Safety Council named Hager’s safety reporting a public interest award winner for 1948. Otto J. Hager produced 67 feature articles with 60 photographs and 99 cartoons mainly on traffic safety, including Canton and county hot spots.
