A dispute over county funds and office control pits ex treasurer Larsen against the newly chosen J. R. Jensen. Larsen refuses to hand over the office amid court orders and threats of arrest for unlawful possession, as Jensen seeks to assume duties and settle accounts. County actions aim to restrict deposits to Burke banks, while Larsen’s proposed settlement relies on certificates of deposit and lingering seed grain debts.
A. Eastgate, previously employed as county agent, left for Bottineau after the board refused to confirm his appointment. Karl Swanson of Ada, Minnesota, was appointed in his place and will arrive in about two weeks to assume charge. Swanson, a married father, has agricultural experience and runs a publishing business in Ada. He will be supported briefly by B. Welliver of the U. S. Department of Agriculture until local arrangements are set.
Minot North Dakota May 5 After an eight mile chase through a blinding snowstorm Lewis Pat Barton of Minot Frank K Wells and George Dewey of Omaha were arrested near Minot early today A Cadillac owned by Selle and 30 cases of whisky were confiscated Officials fired several shots at the tires before halting the car The defendants were arraigned before United States Commissioner Epton and released on bond of 1000 each
In St Paul on April 29 the state supreme court upheld Jackson county court in denying a new trial for A C Townley, N N L president, and Joseph Gilbert, ex-organizer. They were found guilty of trying to discourage enlistment during the war and sentenced to 100 days in jail. Gilbert faces another conviction and is jailed in Goodhue county. The case sparked sensational local history. Townley sought to argue his own case but was denied. The matter may go to the United States Supreme Court.
Minot North Dakota May. Whisky enforcement tightens as state and federal officers press a concerted drive against illicit liquor. F L Watkins says farmers near the border host runners and take 2 to 5 dollars a case commission, complicating seizures. A big campaign will press onward against private stills once imports slow.
Belated mid winter blizzard forced postponement of the cross country relay from Bowbells to Flaxton. The event now slated for Saturday with teams from Bowbells Plaxton Columbus Portal and Lignite to start at 2 20 p m from the post office. Judges meet runners at 1 15 at the courthouse for instructions. Flaxton plans to send over twenty five cars to Bonbella for the start.
The annual Burke County Track and Field Meet will be held in Por al Saturday May 14. Entries are in and county teams train for events. New features include a girls volleyball contest and a boys javelin throw. A full program will appear next week in The Tribune.
The regular teachers examinations will be held Thursday and Friday May 12 and 13 in the Bowhells courthouse starting at 8 30 A M. Teachers who failed February subjects may retake them, no additional examinations are scheduled. Mary Bi Stannard County Superintendent of Schools.

Bowbells and vicinity mourn death of Geo R Clark in Flora Indiana where the long time farmer resided after moving from Bowbells. He died after an illness of tuberculosis at age 54 years 10 months 23 days with funeral at the Church of the Brethren and interment at Maple Hill.
