Rate Hikes Ordered by McAdoo Hit Railways
Washington reports Director General William McAdoo mandated freight rates rise 25 percent and passenger rates up 10.3 cents a mile. The moves aim to raise 800 to 900 million dollars next year and mark the largest railway rate increase in history. Changes apply to standard and tourist sleepers, abolish many special and flat rates, end stopovers and free side trips, and free international freight. Rates take effect June 25 for freight and June 10 for passenger, subject to Interstate Commerce Commission review.
