Minot Worker Buried As Pit Crashes In North Side
John Swords of 128 Third Street sustained a fractured right leg and multiple cuts when an avalanche of earth and gravel collapsed a pit at Fisk Avenue and Seventh Street on the North Side Friday afternoon. Working as a laborer for contractor Benjamin McDonnel, he and several men were loading gravel into a standing wagon. The crust collapsed without warning, burying him. companions dug him out but he suffocated before relief could reach him. An ambulance was sent, but doctors reported he died later at the hospital.
