Tom Hurly states he does not seek reappointment as postmaster after 13 years in office. He confirms he wants to withdraw from active politics and urges patrons to verify his status before signing petitions. He adds he is not backing any other candidate and wishes to remain out of the contest.
Dick King and Fred Dilworth secure a filing on the John Skinner farm eight miles northeast of Bowbells after Skinner’s homestead patent was cancelled by the U S Land Office at Minot. King acted first at the window, gaining superior rights to the 160 acre tract noted as partly broken and pasture for cattle.
The Bowbells general stores will shut at 6 30 each evening starting Friday, a mutual winter arrangement similar to other towns. Roy Huttner has farm duties, with Mr King expected to oversee farming in the future.
Editor E L Penn of the Sherwood Tribune wed Loretta OLeary of Bowbells after a country visit to her boarding place near Bowbells. The couple plans a short honeymoon then housekeeping in Sherwood. The Tribunes notes praise Penn as a leading state journalist and booster for Sherwood.
In Williston North Dakota on January 14 a wedding send off turned dangerous when Loyd Shannon rode a bucking ox behind a wedding party and was dragged trampled and run over by an auto truck. He suffered three fractured ribs a skull fracture and multiple bruises but was later moved to a hospital and expected to recover.
G J Harms of east of the city returned Monday from Hannibal Wisconsin and Minnesota after being approached by Theo Pat taner land man with an offer to swap city property for land near Hannibal The land was timbered stumps and of little value Harms said he would not accept it even if forced to live on it noting a half section here would yield more with less labor He has a history of seeking large trades and has completed many thousand dollar deals since arriving in town.
Washington reports Rep E R Bathrick of Ohio proposed a federal loan program to aid farmers. The plan would create a bureau of farm loans to lend on unencumbered land at 4 1/2 percent, funded by 4 percent bonds. Bathrick cites high interest on farm loans and alleges nationwide farm value growth over 25 years.
Bob Gillespie visiting the county treasurer to pay taxes on Burke county property for non residents. He reports good business in the Magic City and optimism for the Mouse River Metropolis. A sale offers 50 percent off fleeced underwear at Mowers and Mowers while stock lasts. Raymond Emerson, son of Jack Emerson, enters local high school after eighth grade success and seeks boarding for September start.
A dance held at the hall in Woburn on Saturday, under the Yoomnan lodge, coincided with the installation of new officers. About 40 couples attended and enjoyed a good time. Officers installed include Foreman Eugene Porter M C Harry Olson Chaplain Ingolf Wold Correspondent Anna Kistler Master of Accounts Clarence Bryan Overseer W S Clark and Ladies Rowena Rebecca Nellie F Blomgren Augusta Bryan. A second dance is set for January 26, with all invited.
A Baden man Joe Overell, former Kenmare resident, was attacked by masked assailants at his outskirt home. They bound him on a hot stove and tortured him for money, escaping with $85 as he lost consciousness. Overell recalls only the masked intruders, hinting involvement by someone known to him.
Rose Wilson formerly of Minot is said to have been sentenced to six years in a Regina prison for white slavery. Report says her two daughters aged eleven and fourteen were victims. The girls were sent to a house of correction and a man claiming to be her husband received two years. Wilson allegedly ran a resort at Moosejaw and lived in Minot for years before her first husband left. S. G. McKibben of northwest of Minot visited Bowbells on Tuesday and called on The Tribune.
The old Minot National Bank, placed in receivership in 1906, will close with a final cash dividend of 11.5 percent paid to depositors Monday through Wednesday. With 90 percent already declared, total payments plus 1.5 percent interest will fully satisfy creditors. George W. Swords, the receiver, has overseen settlements since his arrival from Iowa.
