Cogswell North Dakota December 30 H A Smith a prominent farmer near Bowbells was almost instantly killed by an exploding tank from a small house lighting plant. The tank vented while Smith leaned over it to pump air and the bottom blew out sending the top off his head and brains scattering. He died soon after. Engine explosion devastates Sie Anderson farm near Schafer
At the Sie Anderson farm ten miles east of Schafer North Dakota a steam traction engine exploded early Wednesday, injuring five men and killing two horses. Ice under the return flue is blamed for a boiler seam, parts blasted across the prairie and the engine body hurled two miles. A large drive pulley was found fifteen rods away.

Columbus Reporter editor to face criminal libel charge
Editor George Cook of the Columbus Reporter was arrested Saturday on a warrant from Justice Randall, charged with criminal libel by Bowbells attorneys. He waived examination, bound over to district court with $2,000 bonds, with Oscar Westrum and Matt Hagen as sureties. The case cites false statements about Bowbells attorneys during the campaign and December 20 issue. Defense by Francis J. Murphy of Minot. The skull suggests a snouted creature akin to an elephant or hippopotamus with large swinelike teeth and ivory enamel.
