New Draft Bill Before Congress Expands Call to 18 46

Washington Aug 5 The new administration manpower bill extends the selective service act to all men 18 to 46 and authorizes the President to draft them. Introduced in both houses, the measure was sent to the military committee for rapid action. Proposals include a national registration day in September to enroll about 200000 new draftees and a plan to expedite passage after the summer recess.

Burke County Fair at Flaxton Proves Tremendous Success

The Burke County second annual fair at Flaxton drew the largest attendance yet with extensive exhibits. Premiums, entertainment, a Bowbella band, carnival tents, and a Delco light plant illuminated the grounds as farmers showcased Percheron horses, Herefords, and Holsteins. Races, dances, and demonstrations complemented three days of successful proceedings.

North Dakota Fuel Order Bans Anthracite Purchases

Local coal dealers were told to avoid hard coin and switch to ignite or bituminous coal as the North Dakota Fuel Administration restricts anthracite shipments. Mrs Gerda Heath Visits In Wisconsin

Mrs Gerda Heath returned from Fond du Lac Wisconsin last week and rented a house in Wisconsin. She plans to move there around the first of next month and resigns as chief operator at the local telephone exchange. Her husband works for Soo engineers on the Stevens Point to Chicago division with a permanent position. No replacement has yet been appointed. Jerry Donovan and family left for Portal then Lake Carlyle camping and fishing with the C Hecht family. The trip used the Feeoyen car. Sherwood editor BL peta visited the Rouse home near Co teau Sunday.

Burke County Seeks 24 Men for Camp Lewis August Call

Burke County Local Board expects 24 men to report for general service at Camp Lewis Washington for the week starting August 26. The adjutant general urges voluntary applications if possible to fulfill the call, with involuntary induction as needed after August 15 to protect harvests. Camp Lewis is large and traveling recruits may see much of the country. those most needed to save crops should volunteer now. Aquatic boys receive a warm sendoff. committees are planning arrangements. Public notices also state that Carl Gilbertson withdraws from the Burke County superintendent race due to a two year contract offer from the Vintage of Lignite school board.

Complete still near Magic City unearthed in North Dakota raid

Minot August 8. Sheriff and State's Attorney Herigstad raided a farm house two miles north of the city finding a complete still and brewery. A man named Hurly from Kentucky was arrested for possession of intoxicating liquor. The site included a tunnel and underground chamber with two vats of malt, raw whiskey, and labeled liquor from a Montana firm. The case will go before district court, with federal authorities already involved.

Stenson Not Looking For Canadian Land in Irma Visit

Mr and Mrs M T Stenson of Clayton township returned from Irma Alberta where they spent two weeks visiting relatives and inspecting land. He saw land yielding 40 to 60 bushels per acre but remains set on his present homestead despite interest in Canada. Wheat and other crops looked good until a recent heavy frost harmed prospects, and drought remains a concern. A local ad for Mankato Commercial College appeared amid regional notices.
