Government horse purchases eyed by farmers at Bowbells meeting
At a Bowbells precinct committeemen meeting a three member committee was formed to see if farmers in the area could sell horses directly to the government. Jim Agrum found the government did not need horses now but would pay for known availability when needed. A township defense council idea was proposed to list horses and alert the state council of defense. Grant L. Mardin, formerly with the Attorney General’s office, resigned and plans to move to Jefferson Barracks after brief visits here, recalling raids and confiscations tied to his tenure.

About twenty Bowbells Masonic members traveled to Oxbow last Monday afternoon. They conferred the Master Mason degree for Bos cariis Lodge No. 39 A. F. & A. M. Refreshments followed. Talks from Bowbells and visiting Saskatchewan and North Dakota lodges included an address by Captain Smith of Caraduf who recently returned on parole after fifteen months in a German prison.

Five Year Sentence For Inhuman Crime In North Dakota
Otto Danielson of Harmonious township aged 24 pled guilty before Judge Leighton at Minot to rape charges involving his sister-in-law’s 13-year-old daughter and possible prior offenses since the girl was ten. Sentenced to five years at the Bismarck penitentiary after confinement at Crosby jail. Danielson, a Norwegian immigrant, had worked around Burke County and stayed with his sister-in-law when unemployed. he had registered under army draft laws and was classified as an alien.

Infant dies from scalding accident in Richardton home
In Richardton North Dakota on August 1 an 18 month old child of Mr and Mrs Huske was killed when hot water spilled from a washing machine during play. The baby, found on the Moor, suffered severe scalds after pulling a draining cork set by the machine’s operation.

Assault case ends with fine and bond in Powers Lake
Arnold VanBerkom of near Powers Lake was arrested Tuesday for assault and battery on banker A. H. Lundquist. After a court hearing he paid about 60 dollars in fines and costs and was bound to keep the peace. Allegations say Lundquist aided in beating VanBerkom out of money, prompting a quarrel and fight prior to the arrest.

New England North Dakota Aug 1 Tom Gallup of this city on furlough from Camp Dodge recalls helping to spring a trap in the hanging of three negroes. He learned later that his rope cut released the trap. At Crosby farmer Max Broye died by his own hand, likely over his drafted son. He lived since 1902 on 800 acres near Crosby. funeral held at home with Rev R J Stinson officiating. Interment on the farm. many friends express sympathy.

Hay rake accident injures North Dakota man
Frank Veverka, 22, of Dickinson, narrowly escaped death after being dragged for several lengths under a hay rake pulled by runaway horses near the Jon Tuma place. His clothing caught in gears as he clung to the seat, leaving him with multiple wounds. Vandenover Captures A Mammoth Snake In Ward County
County Commissioner Peter Vandenover, after a night of drinking, captured a six foot eight inch Prairie Bull snake near Minot. He chased it to Riverside Park, tied its head and body with rope, and secured the creature to a car footboard until it was exhibited at Rio Park. The event drew crowds as North Dakota remains dry and snakes are rare.
