Land Bank Advised Ten North Dakota Farmers

A 1918 letter to Bowbells Farm Loan Association warns farmers to abandon a wheat single crop system. It urges rotating crops, raising livestock, milch cows, and stable income to meet loan obligations. County Fair to Draw Crowds at Flaxton Next Week

Bowbells residents plan to attend the Burke County Fair in Flaxton Thursday through Saturday with exhibits from across the county. The event features a strong premium contest, Beimers Band, a national speaker, additional attractions, and swift horse racing with purses set for intense competition. In a separate report, Jacob Sauter, 68, was killed when his car overturned after a tire blowout near Hebron, injuring his wife who remains hospitalized with serious internal injuries.

Four Involved In Car Wreck Near Sabin Minnesota

A Fargo report says Charles Hauck of St Paul his wife their son and mother in law were injured when their light car overturned near Sabin Minnesota around 10 pm Thursday. Mrs Hauck suffered a fractured arm Mr Hauck serious injuries to an arm and neck the boy serious bruises Mrs Hauck’s mother lightly hurt and due to leave hospital for Grand Forks this afternoon. The St Paul party was en route to pass a Fargo car driven by W W Fuller when the Hauck vehicle slid down a sloping roadside and rolled several times ending upside down.

First Burke County Man Killed in Action in France

The first Burke county man to die in France at the hands of the Prussian foe is Carl Alfred Ofstedahl. A prosperous north city farmer, he was drafted last fall, trained at Camp Dodge, sent home for farming, and later to France where he died after only a few weeks on the fighting line. His death prompted flags at half mast in the city. His widow’s family and local friends recall his industrious life and service for democracy.

Burke and Divide County Draft Men Entertained

A large patriotic celebration in Burke and Divide counties drew about four thousand people. The parade included the Coteau and Seimers bands, Red Cross contingents, and floats from Lakeview, Lucy, and Powers Lake, ending with speeches by Attorney B. L. Wilson and others. Proceeds benefited the Red Cross, with community efforts praised by Mayor Moore.

Tires Stolen From Ford Car At Park

A Ford automobile left at the east hill park Friday night was found minus its rear wheels. Investigators recovered the tires and wheels half a mile east, suggesting a theft by a miscreant.

Postoffice Safe Blown At Eaglevate

Robbers blow open the Eaglevate North Dakota post office causing $2 in cash and a small amount of postage and War Savings stamps to be stolen. The break in occurred during the night and was not found until morning. The safe was wrecked and wet blankets were used to muffle the explosion.

Hillsboro Man Knudson Jailed After Wild Moorhead Drive

Knute Knudson of Hillsboro N D is jailed in Moorhead after a drunken joyride in John Berke’s car. He struck James Wambach aged eight fracturing an ear and flooded the street by snapping a hydrant. George Jervig was detained. Knudson faces automobile operation while intoxicated charges as the case continues for damages.

Hall preparing copy for ten amendments

Bismarck North Dakota July 25 Secretary of State Hall is preparing copy for ten constitutional amendments to appear on fall general election ballots. The measures include an insurance act change to permit a general land tax for an insurance fund to pay bail losses. The secretary has not set ballot placement pending attorney general opinion.

Land grab shocks North Dakota investor near Menoken

Bramarck correspondent reports an investor lost a $10 000 stock for a planned model stock farm after the North Dakota Council of Defense parcelled his grazing land. W. T. Haynes of Tama, Iowa, says no notice was given and crews cropped and hayed his section despite good grazing land. He laments the seizure, vows to relocate family business, and criticizes state governance. Miss Mary Briggs visits Glasgow, Montana, and reports Mr. and Mrs. Jensen thriving.

Lakeview Red Cross Sale Draws Strong Support and Funds

The Lakeview Red Cross sale at Edson on Friday showcased strong community spirit with generous donations and brisk bidding. Proceeds reached 1 687 03 amid a daylong program including patriotic addresses by Dr. Melvor and Rev. Melvor. The fall game saw Lakeview lose 12 to 13 against Rockford, and a dance at the Albert Moon barn closed the event.
