Land Sale Of Battineau County Lands Progresses At Court House
The Battineau county school lands sale continued at the courthouse with about three-fourths sold by noon. Prices ranged from 10 to 41.50 per acre, including the northwest quarter of section 16 in Tacoma township at 41.50. Purchasers include Laporte Cattle company and McKnight Land Company of Russell, with first day totals near 450,000 and expected to top three quarters of a million. State land officials Ole J. Olson and Walter Brown oversee the sale, aided by Iver M. Brandford and H. C. Harty.

Assault arrest in Westhope sparks prior complaint
Mrs. John Coulter filed a war rant against her husband John Coulter and hired man Henry Larson for assault and battery. Larson was discharged after a two to none preliminary ruling. Coulter’s preliminary hearing is set for next Monday. This marks a recurring dispute as Mrs. Coulter previously filed a similar complaint last winter but did not testify at trial.

Pardons Board Commutes Peltier Death Sentence
The state board of pardons commuted Charles Peltier to life imprisonment for the murder of F W Seidel in Bottineau County. He was scheduled to hang February 5 1909. The board did not grant Joseph Peltier's appeal, who faces execution on the same date. The decision draws mixed reaction in the community amid strong sentiment that both Peltiers and the Indian Little Rising Sun should hang. The pardons board members include Governor Burke, Chief Justice Morgan, Attorney General McCue, and others.

Seventh Governor Frederick Faucher of North Dakota
Frederick J Faucher the seventh governor of North Dakota was born in Orleans County New York in 1852. His family moved to Michigan in 1866 and he trained in common schools and at Michigan State Normal School in Ypsilanti. He moved to Chicago in 1871, started in insurance, then moved to North Dakota, homesteaded near Jamestown, led the Farmers Alliance, chaired the constitutional convention, served as Insurance Commissioner from 1896, and was inaugurated governor in 1899. He was renominated by the Republican convention but withdrew due to ill health and is now a merchant in Sacramento California.
