A Beaver County Red Cross branch formed at Clear Lake reports near one hundred members. They claim the oldest member at 76 and the youngest at 61 weeks, with several infants among the new enlistments. Branch seeks to beat its own record in days to come.
Sophia Branch American Red Cross reports 122 new members in the Christmas drive with $57.20 in cash from actions and $11.00 in cash donations. The office notes other districts are active but few send reports. Readers are urged to send in their reports to share ideas for home use.
Knitted items flood Red Cross depots this week with sixty garments in total. Beaver Chapter contributed 18 socks and 10 sweaters and 10 wristlets, Forgan Branch sent 6 pairs of socks and 4 sweaters, Sophia Branch offered mufflers. The piece urges women to seek wartime roles through duty or study, warning against idleness during the crisis.
Wednesday evening the Christian Bible School class of 1916 surprised Mrs E H Mansfield at her home. The event featured unique costumes and charades including a war theme. Officers for the year were elected: President Mrs F C Tracy Secretary Mrs H P Wilhama Assistant Secretary Men Ly Ford Treasurer Mrs W H Robertson Teacher Mrs E H Mansfield Assistant Teacher Mrs George Wright.
Misa Helen Murphy, primary grade teacher, at Green Ridge Missouri, cannot return to her duties due to illness in her younger brother Fred who has suffered head and ear problems and recent operations. his hearing is gone and more surgery may be needed. a substitute from Alva has been secured.
The Oklahoma State Council of Defense informs that federal agents will assist revenue collectors in gathering data for the personal income tax for 1917. Each county becomes a tax district, with married individuals living with a spouse and earning $2000 or more and single persons not head of a family earning $1000 or more required to file returns on prescribed forms. Federal officers will visit counties to administer sworn returns. penalties range from 20 to 1000 dollars plus possible fine and imprisonment for failure to file.
Christmas greetings and holiday travels mark a slice of life in Alva and nearby towns. J ER Provost visits Alva, Art Quinns greet a new baby, families return from Wichita and Norman, while nurses attend J N Phelps and J C Duncan to recover from illness amid New Year subscription appeals. Harvey Floyd trains at Great Lakes and Camp Bowie soldiers are noted.

Methodist church announces Wednesday prayer meeting and Sunday School at 10 a m with morning sermon at 11 and evening service at 7 pm all welcome. Also includes advert for Grove's Tasteless Chill Tonic highlighting quinine and iron with claim of health benefits. 60 cents.
