Alma considers $80,000 bond for water system upgrade

Alma voters may be asked in November to approve an $80,000 bond to finance a deep well system extension, an 150,000 gallon elevated tank, a 1,000,000 gallon reservoir, and related water extensions. City engineer William E. Reynolds outlined plans and costs, including a duplex pump and deeper well taps for future supply, plus fire protection needs. Also reported: David Currell, 80, died in Lanwing after living in Alma since 1870. funeral held at Alma on Ely Street with burial in Riverside Cemetery.

Riverside Cemetery Mausoleum Approval Almost Certain

After a study of a proposed Riverside cemetery mausoleum the Cemetery Board urged the city commission to sign an optional contract with the construction company. Drawings and photos showed a stone exterior and marble interior with 96 crypt capacity plus. If sales do not justify it, the company will not build.

Maid Of The Movies Show Rehearsals At Strand Theater

Rehearsals for Maid Of The Movies a Strand Theater program on October 15 under Eastern Star Alma begin with Marratt Cargill producer Finkler guiding local talent. St Josephus Club Suffers Two Losses to Republic Trucks

In Alma, the St Josephus Club of South Bend lost two games to the Republic Trucks, 5 to 2 and 13 to 8. Sherlow pitched a two hit opening game with eleven strikeouts, while Hagerman fanned nineteen in Sunday’s contest as Republics’ bats surged. The Saturday game featured Tooley Loney and Dunekle sparking the Republics, though Crow and South Bend struggled with travel fatigue and errors.

Gerber Named Alma Chamber President After Rhodes Resigns

At a Monday afternoon Alma Chamber of Commerce meeting Charles G. Rhodes resigned as president citing business demands. Directors elected Harry Gerber, manager of Home Lumber & Fuel Co., as president to lead while the reorganization from Board of Trade to Chamber continues. Henry S. Babcock was added as a director to fill a vacancy from Henry H. Soule’s death. A two-member committee was appointed to seek a full-time secretary and dues policy remains to be settled soon.

Audit of Alma finances completed by Detroit bureau

The Detroit Bureau of Governmental Research finished a four year audit of Alma’s books from March 16 1916 to present. E C Righter reported forty typed pages plus tables detailing clerk balances and financial transactions. The study assessed current financial condition, sources of funds, planned expenditures, and outcomes since 1915 and through October 1 1910 revisions, noting several small errors likely from reporting.

Alma Roller Mills Stock Drives Local Push to Buy

The Alma community moved quickly to back a plan to buy the Alma Roller Mills. About 2,000 shares were subscribed in two hours with 2,000 shares offered to local business men at 7.60 per share, under option on the mill for three fourths of its value. Sophomores Win Annual Alma College Class Scrap

The Sophomores defeated the Freshmen in the annual Alma College class fight held Saturday morning. Yearlings fought from Thursday, with captives on both sides and a late-night clash downtown.
