An old newspaper fragment promotes Alma Patent flour varieties including Rye Viewr Hockwheat Graham Whole Wheat Wheat Grits Corn Meal and Cracked Wheat and urges readers to ask their grocer for the Alma brand products.
The Lee Mercantile Co held its first annual opening Tuesday evening drawing a record crowd to the big store. Departments showcased up to date collars, silks, trimmings, ready to wear, coats and furs. Music by a Sagvnew orchestra and local talent accompanied the display as shoppers admired the elaborate decorations and goods. A ten percent closing sale was announced to begin Friday and run through the weekend.
The Gratiot County Republican campaign opens with a big Alma meeting on Monday night September 24. Governor candidate Fred M. Warner will speak, joined by Wim Alden Smith of Grand Rapids and Charles A. Blair of Jackson for attorney general. A large turnout is expected with a torchlight parade and a St Louis Republican Marching Club contingent. Patrick Kelley for Superintendent may also attend.
Ration Battalion eludend and WHE Hetit Semshon Teockenridge announce a Soldiers Picnic on September 21 at Breckenridge with a three day session starting Thursday. The old Gratiot Battalion was reorganized and invited all soldiers and sailors at WRC to attend with tents. straw provided.
Invitations printed at the Record Men announce Mere J M Heschie successors to M and J Lamborn millinery opening on Sept 1. A grand display is promised with a very large attendance expected in Alma. Rumors suggest the President and Judge Parker intended to accept nominations.
Report of a morning shooting near Gaffney's cigar store caused alarm. Ralph Fisher, entering to work, was questioned by a night watchman who claimed to know him. A bullet pierced the door glass as Fisher exited, and town opinion blamed Buslich for the gun’s reckless discharge within the inn’s hurried atmosphere.
The Alma Fire Team started fast in the wheel racing event at Ponting last Thursday. A hot wheel broke and half remained on a foot, forcing the team to stop. Driver Wai. Peek aided the squad as Flint passed before the second turn, winning by about two lengths. The meet was a pretty contest, with potential different outcome had the accident not occurred.
Clayton Oehler, representing Miracle Pressed Stone Co of Wisconsin, was arrested Wednesday by undersheriff Button for stealing cigars and cash from J. Gaffney's store. He moved from Wright House to the city jail Wednesday night and appeared before Justice Chadwick Thursday, pled not guilty to larceny charges and paid a fine of 20 plus costs.
