Alma public schools open with record enrollment and new facilities

Alma schools began the term with the largest enrollment in history. Over 200 in high school work, 325 in grammar, 247 in primary, with 29 graduates last June and 50 more students than at the start of last year. Fully equipped rooms include domestic science, drawing, commercial and manual training. An orchestra will be formed, night school planned, and football practice to start soon under Messrs Collins and Crisp.

Miss Parker nurses in Mt Pleasant. Miss Mae Wood of Mecosta joins nurses training. Manley Evans of Riverdale operated for cancer of the lip last Wednesday. Miss Ethel Banfield cared for a man hurt pulling stumps. patient died hours later. Mrs John Stambough of Vesta burg hospitalized after operation. condition improving. Miss Ella Cooper graduated from nurses training and plans to practice near Monroe Michigan.

Derailed train near Owosso disrupts Midwest travel

Northbound train No 38 was derailed five miles north of Owosso by spreading rails. Forty foreigners onboard were unharmed and transported from Mt Pleasant to Ithaca. Other local items include barn fire at Martin Marzoli’s, ownership changes in local real estate, several minor injuries, court fines, and residents resuming duties after illnesses and travels.

High School Botany Room Garden Show Rules

The annual school garden contest will be held in the high school botany room at 3 p.m. Saturday. Flowers must be in labeled vases with contributor names. blooms listed alphabetically. Vegetables tied and labeled with owner names. only seed from the school committee grown plants allowed. Entries due by 1:30 p.m. Judges meet at 2:00. Doors open to visitors at 3:00. Free Methodist Pastor Arrives to Lead Local Church

Rev. Quitman Smith has arrived in town to accept the Free Methodist church pastorate. He will begin duties this Sabbath at the church on Cedar Avenue and West Center Street with Sunday school at 10 a.m. preaching at 1 a.m and 7 p.m. A prayer meeting is set for Thursday at 7 30 p.m.

Alma council to assess State street sewer project

Alma Michigan meeting September 2 1913 adjourned session of board of special assessors and city council considered sewer charges and objections. The council approved bills for gate, tax payout and lumber, authorized purchase of a two inch meter, and ordered a special assessment roll for State street sewer with total $829 funding parcels between Superior Walnut and Orchard plus adjacent lots.

Locally notable Alma post office employee Sheri Callihan was honored at his Park Avenue home with a fine clock as he retires effective September 10. Mrs Mabel Chapman Dakin Buried in Alma Riverside Cemetery

Mrs Mabel Chapman Dakin formerly Miss Mabel Chapman died in Phoenix Arizona last week. Her husband Earl Dakin of Riverside California and Mrs Dakin's mother Mrs Walker traveled to Alma for the funeral. Rev J W Priest conducted the Baptist service at the church with many friends attending. Burial followed at Riverside cemetery alongside family. Friends from Elwell Charlotte Flint and Bay City sent floral tributes and condolences.

New Instructors Join Alma School of Music Faculty

Prof J A Fannell of Salina Kansas and Cyril Davis of Ann Arbor join Alma School of Music as assistant vocal instructor and violin director respectively. Fannell praised for choral work and teaching at Wesleyan University and in Salina. Davis trained in Grand Rapids under Wilbur Force, played first violin in a string quartet and in the local symphony.
