Michigan Politicians Clash Over Alger Campaign Moves
A Grand Rapids dispatch reports Senator Alger of Detroit is discouraging Justus S. Stearns and Congressman Win Alden Smith from running for governor and senator. The informant says Alger urged Stearns not to run to avoid a repeat “battle of the barrels” and claimed Barrows would be more valuable than a new senator. The piece notes pressure on Smith and hints at Burrows assisting a future run in 1910. It also covers opposition to Brigadier General Leonard Wood’s promotion, G A R opposition, a circuit court stenographer appointment, and mixed commentary on Barrows and Smith ambitions. Local tidbits touch Canadian trade and other political chatter.
