Caple and Son earn a notable distinction among Alma village merchants in a brief local notice. The feature highlights their standing with area business people and their enduring presence in the town’s commerce scene.
The Record highlights the hardware firm J. B. Caple & Son as a leading Almn business. Caple arrived fifteen years ago and joined A. J. Hall, purchasing from Mr. Bair and partnering with Mr. Hill. With eighty years of combined expertise, they rapidly built a large trade, expanding to a handsome block six years ago and moving from the Church block. Three years later Caple brought his son W. W. Caple into the firm.
Henry Augustus De Lavan a pioneer who arrived in Alma in 1570 built the first brick building and an elevator, ran a mercantile store with his sons, and fought for Republican values. He died Saturday after years of blindness and helplessness, leaving five children and a request for a band at his funeral. His remains will be interred in Jonesville beside his wife.
Walter Hall now drives the firm with clear financial aim and keen business sense. The business has grown beyond hardware to plumbing, heating, and wiring services, stocking builders’ materials and supplies for homes and barns. The shop advertises a full range of hardware, stoves, and related items, highlighting new machinery and expanding stock to serve customers.
