Bean Jobbers Convened Here For Annual Meeting

The Central Michigan Bean Jobbers association held its annual meeting in Alma with about a hundred fifty members and families present. Reports by secretary and treasurer were given in the morning at city hall, followed by crop outlook discussions. officers were elected, and a noon banquet for 150 attended with addresses stressing cooperation and railroad relations.

Death of Gratiot pioneer Benjamin Ray at 97

Benjamin Ray, a longtime Alma resident and one of Gratiot's pioneer citizens, died last week aged in his dth year due to old age. Born November 5 1822 in Liroy Ohio, he married Nancy Post in 1844 and moved to Michigan in 1875 then to Arcada township before settling in Alma twelve years ago. He and Nancy raised six children, all living, and joined the Methodist church in Paw Paw in 1849. Funeral held Sunday at 1 40 pm with Rev Thomas G Brownlow officiating and interment at Ithaca.

Alma High Names Coach as Football Practice Begins

Alma High School starts drills under new coach M. A. Kimball with about eighteen candidates after Tuesday class. veterans Captain Ginnie Campbell Kress Howe Starter Greenhe and Smith expected to lead. Meantime the Home Improvement and Building Association sells ten lots in a new subdivision to Henry Soule for ten houses costing 1500 to 2000 dollars each. The plat will be filed soon, naming of streets and a central park to be handled by local civic groups.

Ben Jones Injured In Gas Explosion Near Store

Ben Jones of the Gra viot County Gas company suffered bruises and a cut above his eye after a small gas explosion last Saturday while piping in the new Fortino Brothers store room rear of their fruit shop. The blast tore tile from the wall and prompted the gas company to issue strict match-use orders for employees. A linked note cites infantile paralysis closing the Illinois picnic in St Johns and delaying school openings.

Professor West Returns to Alma College from Sabbatical

Professor F. L. E. West of Alma College Department of Chemistry returns after twelve months in the western states conducting research at leading universities including the University of Wisconsin and the University of Chicago. He was granted sabbatical leave by the Alma College board of trustees for the 1916-16 college year to advance research for the college’s curriculum.

Professor West Returns from Western Lectures

Professor West, after semestral study at Whierain and California, visited twelve western institutions and met many learned men gaining new ideas. He toured the Panama-Pacific exposition and notable sites like the Grand Canyon and Yosemite Valley. Returning to Alma College, he is better equipped for chemistry work and will be warmly greeted by students taking chemistry courses.

Alma College Enrollments Expected To Surge This Fall

Alma College faces a strong opening for the new year on September 20 as applications for rooms in Wright and Pioneer halls exceed previous years. Officials credit two traveling recruiters including Professor James F.B. Mitchell for attracting new students, while faculty vacancies from resignations are being filled ahead of schedule. Improvements around campus include roof repairs and building repairs, with Postmaster V. P. Seevarens visiting the campus earlier in the week.

Alma schools brace for record enrollment as new year opens

Tuesday morning marked the opening of Alma public schools with the largest enrollment to date. First day totals rose by about 130 from last year, high school counts reached 218 versus 188, and growth continued with unions east of the river and primary divisions showing substantial gains. The district debated new classroom space, potential teachers, and a future school building while city council appointed J W Adams as second ward alderman to replace Bert Eckert.

Pavement Repair and New Millinery Store Opened

Holes in pavement east of the bridge are being repaired as workmen clean out hollow spots and fill with new concrete to restore a smooth surface. The new millinery shop of Mesdames Miner and Bennett, recently bought from Mrs. A B Cook, opens with a full line of hats and plans for dressmaking services. The formal opening runs Friday and Saturday.

Health Department Explains Death of Grace Crownover

The health department outlines the death of Grace Crownover, a month old, citing apoplexy from fever convulsions linked to an enlarged thymus gland. An autopsy by Dr Barstow found the thymus and heart contact implicated. no disease evident in the specimen. Three new whooping cough cases reported. Epworth League Rally Set for County Churches

The Epworth League rally of county Methodist Episcopal units will be held at the city church on Saturday September 6.
