Beatrice Epler, a young resident of Alma, was murdered Tuesday near her home. Riverside police said the slaying occurred at night within sight of her residence, prompting an urgent investigation.
Victim Beatrice Epler, aged seventy, was found strangled near Grover avenue after a night out. Clothes torn and bloodstains indicate a violent struggle. Sheriff Bradford and Officer Campbell questioned suspects. a check for fifty dollars was found with a letter to her father. Inquest opened. evidence points to assault and possible auto involvement.
City Marshal Willian Rogers resigned on Tuesday evening citing poor health and workload from holding two offices. The city council accepted the resignation, appointing Harry Walier as street and weed commissioner. James Campbell will serve as city marshal temporarily.
Gratiot County men drafted head to Battle Creek for five weeks of training with the National Army. A daily one percent of the county’s men depart for camp, with Saturday reduced to two percent. Several alternates and exemptions for industrial reasons are listed, as the county braces for the coming mobilization.
A large crowd in Alma witnessed Billy Brock known as The Ace of the Air perform Sunday and Monday. Estimates say over 5400 attended Sunday with many more for Monday flights. Central Heights and Southview opened sales days drawing visitors from up to fifty miles away for the year’s biggest event.
Veterans of the Civil War and local groups hosted a farewell banquet for Gratiot county drafted men bound for training at Bat Me Creek. Speakers praised patriotism, noted physical fitness by county youths, and thanked the Red Cross and GA R members. The Alma post office will relocate to the Marshall Dallas block around early October amid ongoing construction.
Chauncey Deming Searl, born in 1841 in Brooklyn Ohio, died Friday morning at his home in Perryfield Shiawassee County Michigan aged 85 years 8 months and 21 days. He moved to Michigan in 1855 married Harriet B Kelly in 1837 and built a home at Minefield. Survived by wife and children and a large funeral turnout from Ashley Bannister Ovid Burtoh Gno ses Coruna and Whack. Funeral held at home with Rev Geo Varian officiating.
Coach Harry Helmer prepares Alma College football players at Davis Field within two weeks. Veterans return along with new state high school standouts to form a strong Maroon and Cream squad and to build a crick eleven. Returning linemen include Captain French and several others. backfield prospects will join at Smith and Herholt.
A fragment from The American Issue urges citizens to back victory with modest growth in war resources and notes a matinee of Mothers of France at Genevia Theatre on Saturday and Sunday September 14 and 16 to educate children about the war.
Alma public schools opened with the largest enrollment on opening day, up nearly 30 percent from last year. Primary, intermediate, and high school classes are crowded, forcing half day sessions in one room and planned shifts to extend the school day. Officials expect continued growth until new Hillcrest subdivision and Hillcrest school additions relieve crowded conditions.
Windstorm Co directors levied a 21 cent per 100 assessment after reporting 12 million dollars in new insurance since June 6. Secretary Rogers prepared 15 000 notices with return envelopes as 64 000 notices were mailed by August 4. The company praised for orderly handling of a deluge of business and 1917 era administration. John Beard, driving along the road, was jumped by two men who grabbed the horse. Beard yelled loudly causing the assailants to flee, but he was injured in the fall with a badly injured knee requiring medical treatment. The incident occurred near the scene of Tuesday night’s murder.
The Alum Elevator Company plans a large addition to its plant on South Woodworth Way. A new 410000 bushel capacity elevator will enable grain buying and grinding for trade. Construction uses reinforced concrete, high basements, and heavy timber framing for a strong foundation and tall walls amid ongoing industrial expansion.
