The Michigan Republican Press Association opened meetings yesterday in a dignified way with a fair attendance and more arriving on later trains. Gov. Pingree and Senators Smith and Burrows are expected at tonight's Alma Sanitarium Co banquet. Citizens are invited to attend sessions at the opera house and a musical program in the college chapel this afternoon. A full report will appear in next week's Woman's Club edition of the Revorn.
W Frank Knox the Rough Rider lies ill on furlough but will lecture at Alma Opera House Monday night recounting Santiago experiences. Grand Rapids Herald account describes crowded Third Presbyterian church event with Knox in uniform, audience reaction, and postlecture collection to aid his Alma College studies.
The community learns the 1900s era public school plan with grade by grade assignments. Miss Mary Chase and Miss Laura Button lead first grade. second grade Miss Nettie McLaren. third grade Miss Stella Eagon. fourth grade Miss Nellie Hubbel. Grammar picks include Miss Cora Dunlap for fifth grade and Miss Neo F. Guat for seventh and eighth grades. New sixth grade teacher will occupy former library room. German Latin taught by Miss Gratia Dunning. principal and math taught by F. F. Bradley. Superintendent is FE A. Coddington, BS, noted for experience and state certificates.
J W Holmes arrived back from Fort McPherson Georgia on Monday with his son Milton who had a thirty day sick furlough Milton had been convalescent five days after five weeks of illness including hospital time at Fernandina and Fort McPherson Barster McDonald Eastman were in the hospital with him Eastman was sent home to Harbor Springs Barster was due to leave soon and McDonald to be sent home after convalescence Holmes praises the Red Cross and government care He and Eastman lost about 40 pounds and he says he does not want garrison duty but will not seek a discharge if called.
The Woman's Club plans a September edition of the Record with original material including a story two poems and club histories from the country A report of the Michigan Republican Press Association meetings will appear as well as foreign contributions from Chicago Woman's Club ex presidents a Paris correspondent and possibly Mrs Grover Cleveland A ten cent price and liberal patronage are urged to support the publication Apples Wanted I have opened the Alma apple market and will pay the highest price LH Haye
On Thursday at three o clock p m a pretty wedding occurred at the home of Mr and Mrs Frank Elli cott. Minnie Elli cott married Frank Wheeler of Aberdeen Washington with Rev M D Carrel officiating. About fifty friends attended and gave costly presents including a silver tea and water set from the M E church society. The couple left for Aberdeen via D G R W train 6 16 heading to their new home. The bride is highly regarded in Alma social circles and Mr Wheeler is connected with a wholesale and retail grocery business in Aberdeen.
