Red Cross Membership Drive to Run November 2 11

The third annual Red Cross membership drive in Alma runs from Sunday November 2 through Tuesday November 11 with booths planned at the post office and local drug stores. Mrs Harry Rockwell is publicity chair and workers will wear uniforms and staff the booths to recruit city residents.

Government supply store to open in Alma City Hall

The Alma city commission plans a government surplus store in the West room of Alma City Hall offering foodstuffs clothing and other items from the War Department at very low prices. John Chick and other city officials will oversee sales with goods bought by the city to move quickly. Prices include blankets socks gloves and foodstuffs with draws and cases listed. Also noted is the death of Mrs. D. V. Hubbell 74 in Alma and an upcoming American Legion smoker at the post with related events.

Rapid Beet Delivery Boosts Alma Sugar Plant Output

The Alma plant of Michigan Sugar Co. receives beets faster this year thanks to fine weather and better roads. Nearly 50,000 tons are delivered or in sight as beet sheds fill and piles form nearby for easy handling. The improved quality sustains daily operations at capacity. The Seville and Sumner Farmers' Club meets November 11 at the Lindstrums with a full program, including farm topics and State Farm Bureau notes.

Livingston Hotel Sold in Five Year Lease to Bevt A Hayes

The Livingston hotel in Grand Rapids, a longtime landmark, has been sold to Bevt A Hayes who takes a five year lease with furnishings and equipment. RoE Jones will vacate the hotel on Saturday November 1. Hayes, formerly with the Rapid Heater Company and later in hotels across Indiana and Ohio, has lived in Grand Rapids before and returns to Michigan with plans for strong local support.

Alma woman dies after two weeks illness at 38

Well known Alma resident Mrs. Chick widow of Alvin Chick died Friday after a two week illness age 38. A Alma High and Alma College alumna, she left three children and husband. She belonged to Presbyterian church and Eastern Star lodge, serving as an officer. Funeral held Monday from West Center street home with city offices and labor halting a hour, flag at half mast. interment Riverside Cemetery.

Alma college schedules for basketball and baseball set

The Alma college directors framed eight MIAC basketball games and nine baseball games. The schedule includes Alma versus Adrian Albion Hillsdale Kalamazoo and Adrian with home and away dates from January to May. Alma stock sale to raise fifty thousand dollars

The Northern Wheel company reports Alma is authorized to issue one hundred thousand dollars in stock, with fifty thousand dollars to be offered for immediate sale. County road plans outlined by Gratiot officials

Gratiot county road commissioners George Kuhlman James Gibbs and Frank Hines with a state highway engineer met in Alma to map improvements for four routes including St Logix Alma Ithaca Alma. Paving between Alma and St Louis will be the first project under the new highway program with a twenty foot wide pavement possible for Alma to widen by agreement with the contractor. Some gravelling objections were noted and the Ithaca Alma eastward alignment may shift to meet highway plans with improvements likely next year for certain segments while others may wait until later years.
